Tackling the Sanitation Challenge

Julia King is a PhD student at the London Metropolitan University.  Her concept of promoting sanitation in resettlement areas has bagged the Holcim Award for Sustainable Construction. The proceeds of the award are being used towards the implementation of a sanitation project in a resettlement suburb called Savda Ghevra, developed by the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board about 40 km west of New Delhi to re-house slum dwellers from inner city areas. Julia King says that her approach is "as inclusive as possible, encouraging community ownership but also creating centres for information exchange, which in turn will develop a platform for further livelihood schemes". In this Indian Express article she presents her concept.
